“I had always wanted to work for a small gallery with artists, and Green Mountain College opened that path for me.”

Rosemary Connelli ’18 found her passion in life through art, and she chose to further her passion and experience by enrolling in GMC's Fine Arts major.  As one of the work-study students at Green Mountain College's Feick Art Exhibition Center, she took advantage of the work-study opportunity as a personal way to develop expertise in her major and to inspire social change.

“My entire education through 12th grade was based on the French system, which tends toward the cerebral,” she explains. “In America, there’s much more hands-on learning, and I was eager to start putting my ideas into action.”

People born from 1982 to 2002 (also referred to as Millennials) are unlike the generation that came before them — for instance, research overwhelmingly suggests that their professional priorities lie in more areas than salary and title. While elements like salary and prestige are attractive, Millennials typically want a job and an education that fulfills them in more ways than just financially.

A survey conducted by Capital One in May 2017 found that young, aspiring professionals believe a career that aligns with their personal values is more appealing than working in a lucrative position — a position that doesn’t bring them self-satisfaction. More and more young adults “want to have an immediate impact on the world,” and because of this, they look for undergraduate programs that align with their passions and that will lead them on a personally gratifying path.

Recent Graduate Leaves Behind a Fair Trade Legacy

Before graduating from Green Mountain College in May, Student Senate President Antoine Lucic of Brussels, Belgium, presented the College with a gift: a comprehensive Fair Trade Resolution he authored with the help of fellow students, faculty and administrators.

The resolution commits the College to Fair Trade practices including making Fair Trade certified coffee, tea, chocolate and other products available in dining facilities and in the College’s student-run Coffee House. It was approved by the College’s sustainability committee and adopted by the cabinet on May 10, making GMC an official Fair Trade college.
